Kala is a passionate and motivated businesswoman with over 18 years of experience as a self-employed mother of two. Her drive to become her own boss emerged after 12 years in Government and Local Government roles, such as Judge's PA and Property Manager's PA, where she felt her creative talents and entrepreneurial ambitions were unfulfilled. After years of side hustling while working full-time, Kala made the bold decision to leave her corporate career and pursue a new path as an entrepreneur.

Kala’s entrepreneurial journey includes establishing and selling a boutique jewellery store after seven successful years, founding a commercial cleaning company, and securing ongoing private contracts with various businesses, including Government and Local Government, as a service provider and business mentor. This journey eventually led her to herbalism, a passion she’s held since childhood.  Today, Kala has rebranded Flack Herbals to align with her family name and honour the skills passed down through her lineage.

Kala creates and formulates her own products using herbs from her garden and those sourced within New Zealand, particularly in the Whanganui region, where she enjoys wild foraging most weekends. Her extracts are crafted with passion and a focus on people. Kala’s natural gift for formulation is believed to stem from both sides of her family—her great-grandfather Hugh, a chemist from England, and her Māori ancestry of Whakatohea, Te Whānau-Ā-Apanui, and Ngāi Tahu. She also serves as a business and marketing mentor within her iwi. Transitioning from the corporate world to herbalism feels like a natural evolution for Kala.

Kala is a qualified Herbal Consultant, a member of the Herb Federation of New Zealand, and is continuously expanding her knowledge through formal studies in modern herbalism.
